Torrent FAQ (From Torrentsbooth.com)
What is BitTorrent?
BitTorrent is a peer-to-peer (or P2P) protocol used for the distribution of high-quality/large files over the Internet. With thousands of newly-released movies, TV shows, music tracks, and popular PC games available for download, you can easily find what you want, when you want it and completely free. No more slow download times. The more popular any file is in the torrent community, the faster you get it to your computer.
Is all this "torrent thing" free?
Yes, 100% free; everything is free. Clients (see below) are free and downloading is also free. If anybody charges you anything you are being scammed.
Where can I get a BitTorrent client?
These are the most popular and better bittorrent clients:
- uTorrent (a lightweight and easy-to-use client; highly recommended)
- The official BitTorrent client.
- Azureus (a more advanced BitTorrent client, very popular)
- BitComet (a user-friendly BitTorrent client; growing in popularity)
What is a .torrent file?
A .torrent file is a small metadata file. A file that contains information about the data you want to download, and not the data itself. Your BitTorrent client needs the .torrent file to connect to the tracker (see below) and download the data you want.
What are seeds?
A seed is a client that has completed the download of a certain torrent. Once your BitTorrent client finishes the download, it will remain open until you click the Finish button (or otherwise close it). This is known as being a seed or seeding. To download a torrent there must be at least 1 seed.
What are leechers?
A leecher is a client that is currently downloading a torrent. Generally a leecher does not have the complete file, otherwise it would be called a seed.
What is a tracker?
A server on the internet that acts to coordinate the actions of BitTorrent clients. When you open a torrent, your machine contacts the tracker and asks for a list of seeds and leechers to connect to.
How do I get started?
1. Download a torrent client (see above).
2. Search Torrentsbooth.com for any program/video/book/etc. you desire and get the .torrent file.
3. Add the .torrent to your client and start to download, resume, seed and enjoy! |
